Sanjay Roy was sentenced to life imprisonment till death by a Calcutta court on Monday for raping and killing a doctor of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
On August 9, Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das of Sealdah convicted the doctor of rape and murder. This heinous crime sparked long-lasting protests among all the countrymen of West Bengal.
The court ordered a fine of Rs 50,000 to the criminal Sanjay Roy and a compensation of Rs 17 lakh to the family of the deceased doctor. "The CBI sought death penalty for the crime, while the lawyers sought jail term instead of death penalty," the judge said.
The judge also said that in addition to life imprisonment under section 64, a fine of 50,000 rupees is imposed, if the fine is not paid, five months imprisonment will be given.
Judge Sanjay told Roy that if he is not satisfied with the decision, he can appeal against the decision in the Calcutta High Court and will be given legal assistance if necessary.
Earlier in the court, Sanjay claimed his innocence, repeatedly saying "I am being framed and I have not committed any crime, I have not done anything and I am being blamed."
The parents of the deceased doctor claim that they cannot accept this kind of punishment for the crime, they will go to the high court and want justice.
When the compensation was announced to the slain doctor, the doctor's parents said that they do not want any compensation, they want a fair trial. Their fight will continue until they are able to adequately punish other criminals.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her displeasure with the court's verdict, saying that if the Kolkata Police had handled the case, the death penalty would have been confirmed. Opposition leaders criticized the Chief Minister's comments.
Junior doctors who have been at the forefront of protesting the crime have called for better investigations.
The preliminary investigation by the Calcutta Police arrested Sanjay the day after the body of the doctor was found in the hospital's seminar hall i.e. August 10. Later the case was transferred by the High Court to the CBI who sought the death sentence of Sanjay Roy.
