We've seen The Reluctant Fundamentalist, where a man was falsely accused of involvement in the 9/11 attacks, highlighting how the Islamic community was unfairly targeted and subjected to an unjust legal system.

However, it seems that anti-Islamic sentiments remain just as prevalent today, now intertwined with growing anti-Palestinian bias. However, anti-Palestinian sentiments appear to be just as widespread as anti-Islamic sentiments.

Federal agents in the United States have detained Badar Khan Suri, an Indian national and postdoctoral fellow at Georgetown University, over allegations of promoting antisemitism and alleged ties to the Palestinian militant group Hamas, Fox News reported, citing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Suri was taken into custody outside his Virginia residence on Monday night after being informed that his visa was revoked. According to his legal counsel, he is currently awaiting an immigration court hearing. Despite holding no criminal record, Suri contends that he is being unfairly targeted due to his wife's Palestinian heritage, as reported by Politico.

The Trump administration invoked a rarely used immigration law that grants the Secretary of State the authority to deport non-citizens deemed a threat to US foreign policy. In a statement accessed by Fox News, Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted that Suri's activities rendered him deportable.

This same provision was previously used to expel Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student and green card holder, who had reportedly led pro-Palestinian demonstrations last year. Suri, a former student of Jamia Millia Islamia, specialized in peace and conflict studies and was teaching "Majoritarianism and Minority Rights in South Asia" at Georgetown University.

His lawyer, speaking to Reuters, criticized the decision, stating,"If an accomplished scholar who focuses on conflict resolution is whom the government decides is bad for foreign policy, then perhaps the problem is with the government, not the scholar”.

The incident follows the self-deportation of another Indian student, Ranjani Srinivasan, who faced similar accusations of antisemitism and left the US via the CBP Home App to evade detention.

The Trump administration’s crackdown on foreign students linked to anti-Israel protests has escalated, sparking widespread debate over academic freedom and immigration policies.

"If an accomplished scholar who focuses on conflict resolution is whom the government decides is bad for foreign policy, then perhaps the problem is with the government, not the scholar," Suri's lawyer told international news agency Reuters.
