Rekha Gupta becomes Delhi’s Chief Minister, marking BJP’s return to power after nearly 30 years, alongside Deputy CM Parvesh Verma. The swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for this afternoon at Ramlila Maidan, a venue synonymous with significant political events in Delhi. The event is expected to be a grand affair, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, BJP President JP Nadda, and Chief Ministers from various BJP-ruled states in attendance. The BJP has extended invitations to a diverse group, including movie stars, industrialists, auto-rickshaw drivers, and farmers, emphasizing its commitment to inclusivity. Prior to the ceremony, Gupta is expected to visit the Hanuman Mandir at Marghat, reflecting her personal traditions.
Rekha Gupta: The Journey to Leadership
Born on July 19, 1974, in Nandgarh village, Jind district, Haryana, Rekha Gupta's early life was rooted in modest beginnings. Her family relocated to Delhi when she was two years old. Gupta's academic journey saw her attending Delhi University, where she became actively involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Her dedication and leadership qualities led to her election as the President of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) for the 1996-1997 term.
Transitioning from student politics, Gupta's commitment to public service continued with her involvement in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), the youth wing of the BJP. She served as the National Secretary of BJYM from 2004 to 2006. In 2007, she was elected as a councillor in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections, representing the North Pitampura constituency. During her tenure, she chaired the Women's Welfare and Child Development Committee from 2007 to 2009. Her consistent dedication culminated in her election as the Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Shalimar Bagh in the recent elections, where she defeated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate by over 29,000 votes.
Parvesh Verma: The Deputy Chief Minister
Joining Gupta in the new administration is Parvesh Verma, who will assume the role of Deputy Chief Minister. Born on November 7, 1977, Verma is the son of the late Sahib Singh Verma, a former Chief Minister of Delhi. He pursued his education at Delhi Public School, R.K. Puram, and later graduated from Kirori Mal College. Furthering his academic credentials, Verma earned a Master of Business Administration from the Fore School of Management.
The Road Ahead
The Gupta-Verma administration has outlined a comprehensive agenda aimed at addressing some of Delhi's most pressing challenges. A top priority is the Mahila Samriddhi Yojna, a scheme designed to provide ₹2,500 monthly to eligible women, with plans to implement this by March 8. Additionally, the government is committed to infrastructure development, including the rejuvenation of the Yamuna River and the enhancement of public services such as education, healthcare, and electricity. These initiatives reflect the BJP's broader vision for Delhi's growth and the well-being of its residents.
As Delhi stands on the cusp of this new chapter, the leadership of Rekha Gupta and Parvesh Verma symbolizes a blend of experience, dedication, and a forward-looking vision for the capital's future.
