A high-level delegation led by Maharashtra’s Cultural Affairs and Information Technology Minister, Ashish Shelar, has departed for Paris to push for UNESCO World Heritage status for 12 historic forts associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
The forts under consideration include 11 located in Maharashtra—Raigad, Rajgad, Pratapgad, Panhala, Shivneri, Lohagad, Salher, Sindhudurg, Suvarnadurg, Vijaydurg, and Khanderi Fort—along with one fort in Tamil Nadu, Jinji Fort.
Shelar is joined by Additional Chief Secretary Vikas Kharge, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Archaeology and Museums Hemant Dalvi, and architect Shikha Jain. The four-member team will remain in Paris until February 26, where they will present technical and diplomatic arguments before UNESCO officials to emphasize the historical and architectural importance of these forts.
Securing UNESCO World Heritage status would enhance conservation and preservation efforts while providing a significant boost to Maharashtra’s tourism industry. "This recognition will not only safeguard Maharashtra’s cultural heritage but also contribute to the local economy," Shelar stated.
Shelar expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for forwarding the proposal to UNESCO and to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis for entrusting him with the responsibility of representing Maharashtra on a global platform.
On Shivaji Jayanti, Fadnavis had also announced the formation of a task force to clear encroachments around historic forts, ensuring their long-term protection and restoration. As Maharashtra continues its journey to honor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s legacy, this initiative aims to cement his forts’ place in global history while strengthening the state’s cultural identity and economic future.
