India’s top fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, won the prestigious Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy as the

ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year 2024. He won the award against tough competition from Joe

Root, Travis Head, and Harry Brook. With this, the 31-year-old Bumrah became only the fifth

Indian to win the award, following Rahul Dravid (2004), Sachin Tendulkar (2010),

Ravichandran Ashwin (2016), and Virat Kohli (2017, 2018). Bumrah had an outstanding year in

Tests and T20Is, leading India’s bowling attack. He played a key role in India’s 2024 T20 World

Cup victory, taking 15 wickets at an impressive average of 8.26 and an economy rate of 4.17.

His crucial performances, especially against Pakistan in the league stage and South Africa in the

final, earned him the Player of the Tournament title.

Bumrah was also brilliant in Test cricket, taking 71 wickets in 2024, which was 19 more than the

next-best bowler, Gus Atkinson. This was the second-highest tally by an Indian pacer in a year,

after Kapil Dev. His outstanding performances helped him become the No.1 ranked Test bowler,

and he became the first Indian to cross 900 rating points in Test rankings. Bumrah also passed

the 200-wicket mark in Tests with the best bowling average among Indian pacers. His incredible

performances won him the ICC Test Player of the Year award. Bumrah was India’s best

performer in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. Although India lost the series 1-3,

Bumrah took 32 wickets in five Tests and helped India stay competitive despite other

weaknesses in the team.

Azmatullah Omarzai of Afghanistan won the ICC Men’s ODI Cricketer of the Year. Kamindu

Mendis from Sri Lanka was named the ICC Emerging Men’s Cricketer of the Year. He set a

record by reaching 1,000 Test runs in just 75 years and scored 1,049 runs in nine Tests. He also

became the first player to score a half-century in each of his first eight matches. Gerhard

Erasmus from Namibia won the ICC Men’s Associate Cricketer of the Year award. India’s

Arshdeep Singh became the youngest Indian to win a World Cricketer Award. The 25-year-old

left-arm pacer took 36 wickets in T20Is in 2024 at an average of 13.50. He played a major role in

India’s T20 World Cup win, taking 17 wickets in the tournament.
