WASHINGTON: Donald Trump has signed a proclamation recognizing February 9 as "the first ever Gulf of America Day" following an executive order to rename the Gulf of Mexico.
On Sunday, Trump signed the proclamation on his way to the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
"We're going over it right now," Trump said, pen in hand. "So we thought it would be appropriate."
"I am visiting the Gulf today for the first time since it was renamed," Trump said in a statement posted on the White House website.
On January 20, Trump signed an executive order during his inauguration. There the home department was given 30 days to take all necessary steps to change the name.
After Trump signed the executive order, the U.S. Gulf Force began using the term "America's Gulf" in what is believed to be the first official use by the U.S. government.
Trump's proclamation said, "We should come together for our great nation as my administration restores the American womb to the history of American greatness. And it is fitting to come together to commemorate the renaming of America's Gulf."
He added, "Now, therefore, I, the President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, hereby declare February 9, 2025, to be America's Gulf Day by the Constitution and by law."
He called on all government officials and all the people of the United States to celebrate the day with appropriate programs and activities.
