New delhi: vikas Yadav, a former Indian government employee on the FBI's wanted list, was also arrested ten months ago by the delhi police for attempted murder chargesand kidnapping.
The recent allegations on involvement of a former RAW agent, Vikas Yadav, in a failed plot to assassinate Khalistani terrorist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun have sent terror to both India and the United States.
The most noticeable figure in this was Vikas Yadav, the mastermind behind the assaisination, who once was a part of Indian intelligence.
According to US prosecutors, Yadav planned a plot to have Pannun, murdered in the United States. The alleged conspiracy involved recruiting Nikhil Gupta, who was subsequently arrested in the Czech Republic and returned to the US.
at present, vikas Yadav is facing three charges: conspiracy to hire a hitman, the actual "murder-for-hire" plot, and money laundering.
Many of the details in the document had the same narratives but, now Yadav's name was disclosed. "Yadav recruited Gupta to orchestrate the assassination of the Victim in the United States" and that under Yadav's directions, Gupta contacted a government "confidential source" who he thought was "a criminal associate," it said.
As per the document, the alleged plot began around May 6 last year with Yadav sending Gupta a message on an encrypted app, "This is Vikas ... save my name as Aman".
In June 2023, they hired a hitman and agreed on a payment of $100,000 to allegedly kill the victim, the court document which did not name Pannun said. Yadav and Gupta arranged through an "associate of Yadav" to give $15,000 as advance.
The plot, however, was failed when the hitman hired by Nikhil Gupta turned out to be an undercover US law enforcement officer.
With the US government pursuing the case, the Indian government has also stepped in. An Indian Enquiry Committee was dispatched to Washington to discuss the matter with US officials, and to understand the ground situation. The committee's findings are awaited, as they could shed further light on the extent of Yadav's involvement and the potential harm to the India's intelligence agencies.
As the investigation continues, the full extent of Yadav's alleged crimes and the motivations behind his actions remain to be uncovered.
