A couple was arrested on Thursday for allegedly causing the death of their one-month-old daughter, as part of a sacrifice during a ritual intended to exorcise evil spirits from their home.

A tantrik told the couple that ‘an evil spirit has been keeping the mother (Mamta) ill since the birth of their daughter'. After killing their child, the couple dumped her body in a canal. The crime was reported from Belda village in Muzaffarnagar.

According to locals, Gopal Singh (35), a daily wage worker, married Mamta (32) last year following the death of his first wife. Since the birth of their daughter, Mamta's health had been deteriorating. On Tuesday, the couple visited a tantrik. Upon their return, neighbors noticed the baby was missing and informed the police.SP (rural), Aditya Bansal, said, "Following a tip-off from villagers, we conducted preliminary probe and arrested the couple on Wednesday”.

Couple said they believed sacrificing the child would help 'drive out evil spirit from their house'. Mamta said she had recurring dreams urging her to sacrifice her daughter, police said. While infant's clothes were recovered, her body is still missing.
