Kerala : An 18-year-old girl from Kerala has died after trying to survive by drinking hot water for months. The Thalassery hospital said the girl was suffering from anorexia nervosa and weighed 24 kg when she died.

The deceased girl's name is Shri Nanda. She was heavily influenced by online weight loss advice and survived on water for months. She stopped eating solid food for about six months.

Hospital doctor Dr. Nagesh Manohar Prabhu told the media that when the girl was brought to the hospital 12 days ago, she had to be admitted to the ICU.

He added, "Her weight was only 24 kg. Her sugar level, sodium, and blood pressure were all low. Even after being put on ventilator support, his condition did not improve, and he later died."

Anorexia is an eating disorder. People with this disorder take drastic measures to lose weight, even to the point of endangering their lives. People with this disorder have a distorted body image, which leads to excessive weight loss.

The girl's family claims that her condition has been deteriorating for the past five to six months, and she is not eating anything. When her family used to give her food, she would only drink water instead.

When she became weak while in this condition, her family took her to a hospital, where doctors advised her family to seek psychological counselling for her.

Two months before the girl's death, her family took her to the Medical College Hospital, Kozhikode, due to her health condition. Two weeks ago, the girl's blood sugar level dropped, and she developed breathing difficulties. She was then rushed to the ICU, where she died.
